Module unit 11. Leading Morbid Syndromes in Children with Surgical Disease

Acute abdominal pain. Acute appendicitis, peritonitis, non-specific mesenteric adenitis, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, pancreatitis, cholecystitis, bowel obstruction, ovarian apoplexy, and renal colic. Characteristics of pain depending on the disease. Methods of investigation, diagnostics, differential diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation approaches, and prognosis.

Vomiting in infants and young children. Congenital pyloric stenosis, duodenal atresia, duodenal stenosis, intestinal malrotation, small bowel atresia, congenital mid-gut volvulus, meconium ileus, Hirschsprung’s disease, rectal atresia, and anal atresia. Characteristics of vomiting depending on the disease, methods of investigation, diagnostics, differential diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation approaches, and prognosis.

Dyspnea in infants and young children. Pulmonary adhesion and hypoplasia, congenital localized emphysema, lung cysts, esophageal atresia, tracheoesophageal fistula, diaphragmatic hernia, mediastinal tumors and cysts, pneumothorax, hemothorax, and foreign bodies in the trachea and bronchi. Characteristics of dyspnea depending on the disease, methods of investigation, diagnostics, differential diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation approaches, and prognosis.

Urinary syndrome in children. Hydronephrosis, megalourether, vesicoureteral reflux, renal and ureteral duplication, polycystic kidney disease, obstructive pyelonephritis, cystitis, urinary stone disease, and tumors of the urinary bladder. Characteristics of the syndrome depending on the disease, methods of investigation, diagnostics, differential diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation approaches, and prognosis.

Palpable tumors of the abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space. Hepatic tumors (hepatoma), renal tumors (nephroblastoma), ovarian cyst, abdominal lymphangiomas (cysts of the greater omentum, mesenteric cysts, enterocysts), and neurogenic tumors. Methods of investigation, diagnostics, differential diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation approaches, and prognosis.

Module 5 exam.

Notes:
1. Practice classes start at 8 AM to 12:55 PM
2. Each student will be managing one patient and recording a case history
3. Independent study assignments will be evaluated by your instructor during every class, and are included into the module exam
